Things to do and places to see in London

The capital of Great Britain needs no introduction. A modern and vibrant city is waiting for you to show what it's got. There are plenty of things to do in London no doubt. Experience panoramic city views from the top of the London Eye or the viewing point at The Shard. Walk around the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain at Piccadilly Circus or visit Tower Bridge.

Then, spend an afternoon in Hyde Park horseback riding or strolling around the Rose Garden. See relics from two of the ancient world's seven wonders at the British Museum - the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus where you can also view Imperial jades, Aztec art and the Classical Greek era Parthenon Marbles.

If you are looking for more excitement, take a boat ride to Greenwich. Catch the boat just outside Westminster bridge and sail down the Themes right to the small town of Greenwich where time started! Enjoy a walk in the park, take a look around the famous Cutty Sark merchant ship. During your visit to London, you can travel by tube or bus throughout the day getting from place to place as you wish.

How to get from the airport to the city centre?

Heathrow Airport is a major international airport in London. It's located around 20 miles from the city centre and it is very well connected by trains, tube and other means of transport.

London Underground (Tube): Heathrow is connected with the city by tube. The Piccadilly line wraps around the airport connecting all Terminals. It runs every few minutes and will take you to any central location in under 1 hour. It is the quickest and most efficient way of getting to town.

Trains: Non-stop trains run to Paddington every 15 minutes, and the journey time is 15-20 minutes from all Terminals. Worth noting that Paddington is not in the city centre as such. You will need to take another tube ride, taxi or bus to get to the heart of London.

Taxi: There are plenty of taxis outside all terminals. They are very popular at Heathrow so we recommend you book something in advance as you may get stuck waiting for your turn. The ride to town costs £40 - £70 and could take up to 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Buses: The National Express Bus runs from all Heathrow terminals. Buses go to Victoria station or Hammersmith. The cost will range between £5 - £7 and take around 1 hour, depending on traffic.

We highly recommend taking the Piccadilly line tube as it will take you literally almost any place in central London.

Do I need a Visa to visit London?

A visa is not required for either tourist or business stays. You’ll need to comply with all government travel requirements. Please view specific documentation requirements on the U.S. Department of State's website. U.S. citizens don’t require transit visas to connect through Ireland into Europe.

For citizens of all other countries travelling from the U.S., requirements vary. It’s your own personal responsibility to ensure you’re in compliance with all relevant requirements, and you’re advised to check with the Irish consulate for the correct information.
