Notre Dame de la Garde
Emblem of the city of Marseille, the Notre Dame de la Garde can be seen from every corner of the city and faces the Mediterranean sea from above. The basilica, built based on a Roman-Byzantine style, had its first stone laid on 1853, but the construction was finished only in June 1864.
One of the symbols of the city, the Old Port is where the ancient Greek colony Massalia was founded, that later became the Roman Massilia. The medieval Marsiho was also built around it, with its entrance guarded by two forts, Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Jean.
