Things to do and places to see in Lyon

A popular tourist destination in France - called, in fact, France’s “second city” after Paris - Lyon has a vibrant community, famous for its university, first-class shopping, antique markets, vibrant theatre and music festivals.

  • Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
The Fourvière Basilica is an iconic building that overlooks the whole of Lyon with a panoramic view from the esplanade, and an inside richly decorated with mosaics, stained-glass windows and marble.
  • Vieux-Lyon
Renovated in the 60s, the neighbourhood is now a conservation area of France and one of the vastest Renaissance groups of Europe, with an area of 24 ha. At the foot of the hill of Fourvière, it shows examples of the medieval period and an archaeological garden towards the cathedral.
  • Place des Célestins
The marvellous square is also famous for its Theatre, built in 1972 on the vestiges of a Celestine monastery, that has been the temple of theatrics and the dramatic performances in the city.

How to get from the airport to the city centre?

Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport is distant circa 30km/20 miles from Lyon city centre. The best ways to do the journey are with the tram or taxi.

Taxi: Taxis are available at the airport and are the easiest option to go to the city centre - but beware: a taxi between the airport and the city centre can cost anywhere between €50–€100, based on the time/day and if you book in advance.

Tram: The Rhônexpress is a tram service that goes from the airport to Lyon’s Part-Dieu train station. The journey will take around 30 minutes and tickets cost from €16.

Do I need a Visa to visit Lyon?
