6 Ways To Celebrate Irish-American History This St. Patrick’s Day

6 min read

Saint Patrick’s Day has always been about more than parades, pints, and plastic shamrocks. It’s a celebration of a rich history shared by Ireland and the United States — through people, stories, music, and traditions — that Aer Lingus has been a proud part of for more than 65 years.

If you’re planning to visit Ireland, head stateside, or take a fun-filled family trip, here are six ways you can explore the Irish-American connection this St. Patrick’s Day — on both sides of the ocean.

Celebrating in Ireland

1. Experience the St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Dublin

In Ireland, we make toasting St. Patrick a week-long affair. Every March, Dublin comes alive with a weeklong festival of parades, funfairs, and street performances.

A highlight in recent years has been the Céilí Mór in Merrion Square, which sees champion Irish dancers and passionate amateurs come together to learn steps, listen to the Irish language, and tap their toes to traditional music.

If you prefer a deeper dive into Irish-American history, make sure to put EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum on your itinerary. Fly direct to Dublin from the USA to find yourself in the heart of Irish heritage in a couple of short hours.

2. Follow the emigrant trail in Cobh, Cork

Cobh was once the departure point for more than 2 million emigrants who left Irish shores for America. Today, it offers a chance to immerse yourself in history — and enjoy fresh seafood or stroll the seaside promenade.

A visit to the Cobh Heritage Centre is a must for travellers with Irish-American heritage, as it traces Ireland’s long history of emigration with personal stories, passenger records, and historical exhibits.

You can also see where the Titanic stopped on its last ill-fated voyage, and follow the journey of its passengers in the Titanic Experience, Cobh.

There’s also a small but fascinating Lusitania Museum in nearby Kinsale, a beautiful harborside town with colourful houses and award-winning restaurants.

3. Take a road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way

If you fancy something a little quieter, calmer, and simpler, the West of Ireland is a great place to spend St. Patrick’s Day 2026.

The unforgettable Wild Atlantic Way follows the Irish coastline, taking in villages and towns that sent many sons and daughters to America over the years. If you want to break up the journey, you’ll find plenty of small parades, pop-up events, and music-filled pubs along the way.

You might also want to tour the Cliffs of Moher, hike the Burren, or stop for some storytelling, craft-making, and family fun at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. There you can see how your ancestors might have lived, learned, and worked in a traditional village.

If you really want to get into the swing of things, take a seat at a lively medieval banquet in the park’s 15th century castle. The best part? Bunratty is just 10 minutes from the airport, with direct flights from Shannon to the USA every day.

4. March along Fifth Avenue in New York

The Big Apple makes major events an art form, hosting what is widely considered the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world. Every year, thousands of people fly to New York from Ireland and Europe just to soak up this magical cultural experience.

Attracting roughly 2 million spectators and featuring up to 250,000 participants, the 265th New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off this year at 11am. If you want a good vantage point to see performers, pipe bands, and sports teams, arrive early and pick a good spot along 5th Avenue. The parade has been running since 1762, growing bigger and more spectacular every year.

5. See the river run green in Chicago

The Windy City has a novel way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day every year — it dyes its river green. Said to be started by local plumbers in 1962 (who used the green dye in their everyday work), this beloved tradition is set to take place on Saturday, March 14th this year.

The best place to watch the event is along the Chicago River between State and Columbus. That kicks off at 10am, leaving you enough time to head on over to catch the 70th annual Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

If flag-waving floats, troops of Irish dancers, and rousing marching bands feels like a little too much, head to the Irish American Heritage Center, where you can enjoy relaxing events like Celtic art classes or Irish singing workshops. Book a flight to Chicago to make this March one to remember.

6. Enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast in Boston

Green roots run deep in Boston, with one in five people in Massachusetts claiming Irish ancestry. If you’re planning to fly direct from Dublin to Boston for St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll find plenty to do, from the annual parade to the Irish Heritage Trail and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.

There’s no better way to kick-start your celebrations than an authentic Bostonian breakfast. A century-old tradition, these breakfasts usually take place in pubs, social clubs, and community halls across Irish-American neighbourhoods. They’ll also feature firm favourites like eggs, bacon, and soda bread. If you’re travelling from Ireland, be sure to pack a box of Barry’s or Lyons tea — your hosts will thank you!

If you’d prefer something a little more formal, head to one of the city’s special ticketed events such as the Irish American Partnership Breakfast Celebration or the 2026 St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast.
