{"id":7016,"date":"2021-09-15T14:29:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-15T13:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.aerlingus.com\/?p=7016"},"modified":"2024-10-03T10:25:11","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T10:25:11","slug":"today-were-flying-a-three-year-old-loggerhead-turtle-home-to-gran-canaria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aerlingus.com\/hub\/today-were-flying-a-three-year-old-loggerhead-turtle-home-to-gran-canaria\/","title":{"rendered":"Today we&#8217;re flying a three year old loggerhead turtle home to Gran Canaria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"component text-block rich-text  padM padBottom\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xl-8 offset-xl-2\">\n\t\t\t\t<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Some days are just turtally awesome!<\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Today, in partnership with Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry, Co Down, we&#8217;re repatriating a young endangered turtle on flight EI 782\u00a0 from Dublin to Gran Canaria.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Back in January 2019, a nine month old loggerhead sea turtle (named Julius Caesar or &#8216;JC&#8217; to his friends) was found washed up on a Donegal beach.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Thought to have been caught up in the wrong current and swept along the gulf stream, he was suffering from hypothermia, stunned by the cold water, and weighed just a few hundred grams. Loggerhead sea turtles are an endangered species and thrive in a warm climate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"component text-block rich-text  padM padBottom\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xl-8 offset-xl-2\">\n\t\t\t\t<h4><strong>Discovered by a local family, JC was named for his fighting spirit and was brought to Exploris.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>He has since been recuperating in a tropical tank and enjoying a diet of fish mixture, squid and gel in preparation for his voyage to Tarifa Wildlife Recovery Centre (Centro de Recuperaci\u00f3n de Fauna Silvestrede Tarifa) in Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 restrictions previously prevented the repatriation efforts but JC, now weighing 25kg, will today travel south to the Canary Islands on our flight EI 782, captained by Peter Lumsden.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aerlingus.com\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/On-baord-with-pilot-and-crew.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>JC will travel in the cabin in a specially designed waterproof crate, accompanied by his minder Portia Sampson, where he will be warm, secure and can be monitored at all times.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"component text-block rich-text  padM padBottom\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xl-8 offset-xl-2\">\n\t\t\t\t<h4><strong>JC all checked in and ready to fly<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Pilot Captain Peter Lumsden, commented: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is our pleasure to welcome aboard a very special passenger today and to ensure the safe transportation of JC the Turtle to Gran Canaria. Since they first got in contact, Aer Lingus has worked closely with the team from Exploris Aquarium and our Maintenance &amp; Engineering and Ground Operations teams to ensure that all JC\u2019s needs are met as we complete this important mission. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Keeping the turtle\u2019s temperature above 19 degrees is critical to his wellbeing and he requires regular monitoring and shell lubrication so placing him in the aircraft hold was not an option. His specially designed crate will be securely strapped across a number of seats in the cabin. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Like all of us on the flight today, I\u2019m sure he is looking forward to the warmer climate upon landing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"component text-block rich-text  padM padBottom\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-xl-8 offset-xl-2\">\n\t\t\t\t<h4><strong>Upon arrival in Gran Canaria, JC will be under the care of veterinarian Pascual Calabuig of the Tarifa Wildlife Recovery Centre.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aerlingus.com\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/boarding-pass-turtle-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They will oversee his acclimatisation to the warmer weather and monitor his behaviour, feeding and physical condition before releasing JC back into the sea later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, JC is <a href=\"https:\/\/gbr01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmediacentre.aerlingus.com%2Fnews%2F02122014%2Fits-up-up-and-away-for-leona-the-loggerhead-turtle-as-she-jets-off-to-her-new-home-in-gran-canaria&amp;data=04%7C01%7CEmma.Lahiffe%40aerlingus.com%7C05c2658f0b1f42ed7d8e08d9784904c3%7C57bf7636536c46bf9adef72b859bc5c0%7C0%7C0%7C637673077264491767%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=2GBJEWzkk744Udo3NsPgC7Mn3qic62tEdMw1Zaa1tR8%3D&amp;reserved=0\">not the first turtle that we have repatriated<\/a>. Another rogue loggerhead turtle, Leona, was found in Co. Clare in 2013 and\u00a0 we transported her to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria in December 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Loggerhead turtles are a vulnerable and endangered species and their numbers are in decline in the wild. Loggerhead turtles are expected to reach 100kg by the time they become adults.
