You\u2019ve touched down in the Fair City. The bags are collected, the excitement is building and now comes the big question\u2026 How does getting around Dublin actually work?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Dublin is a city that\u2019s best explored with a little bit of local know-how. And lucky for you, we\u2019re the experts there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re hopping on the Dart for those stunning coastal views or navigating the cobblestones of Temple Bar (stilettos not recommended!), we\u2019ve rounded up everything you need to move through Dublin like a pro.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"People<\/p>\n

Getting from Dublin Airport to the city centre<\/span><\/h2>\n

You\u2019ve got plenty of great options to bridge the 10km gap to the city centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dublin Bus<\/span><\/h3>\n

The cheapest way to get out of the airport is by travelling on <\/span>Dublin Bus<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hop on a 16, 19, 24 or 41 and you\u2019ll get into town for \u20ac2 with a Leap Card (more on that later) or \u20ac2.60 without. <\/span>The journey takes at least 45 minutes, so it\u2019s longer than the other options. But if you have the time or you\u2019re on a budget, it\u2019s a great option.<\/span><\/p>\n

Express Bus Services<\/span><\/h3>\n

Dublin Express<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Aircoach<\/span><\/a> are your ticket to a direct, comfortable run into town. You can expect Wi-Fi, plenty of luggage space and stops at key spots around the city like O\u2019Connell Street, Trinity College and Heuston Station.<\/span><\/p>\n

They usually take about 25 minutes with one-way rides \u20ac10 and return trips \u20ac13. <\/span>You can buy them online in advance or from the driver.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you book online, Dublin Express tickets are a little more flexible. They can be used on any of their buses either 12 hours before or after your chosen time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, you\u2019ve got to ring Aircoach to make changes to your booking. But as Aircoach offer services between Dublin Airport and Belfast, Cork and Galway, they\u2019re a good choice if you\u2019re going further afield.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Dublin<\/p>\n

Taxis<\/span><\/h3>\n

Taxis are often the quickest way to get out of the airport, particularly if you\u2019re aiming for somewhere other than the city centre. There\u2019s a <\/span>well-managed taxi rank <\/span><\/a>outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depending on where you\u2019re headed and the time of day, a trip to the city centre costs between \u20ac25 and \u20ac45. The drive should take between 20 and 40 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Taxi<\/p>\n

Take the Leap<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you’re planning on getting a lot of public transport on your trip, a <\/span>Leap Card<\/span><\/a> will be your not-so-secret weapon. <\/span>You can use it on Dublin Bus, the Luas (the tram) and the Dart (train).<\/span><\/p>\n

You can also use it in many of Ireland\u2019s biggest cities and towns including <\/span>Cork<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Galway<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Limerick<\/span><\/a>, so ideal if you’re city hopping. <\/span>There are a couple of different routes you can take for this. You can get a regular Leap Card or a Visitor Leap Card. What\u2019s the difference?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Regular Leap Cards<\/span><\/h3>\n

Regular Leap Cards cost \u20ac5 and are available in over 2,000 outlets nationwide, including the Spar in Terminal 2. Once you have your card, you top it up in a shop, Dart station or Luas stop, or on <\/span>this app<\/span><\/a> and spend as you go. Leap fares are roughly 30% less than the cash equivalent.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Dublin<\/span><\/a>, a <\/span>90-minute trip<\/span><\/a> across any combination of Dublin Bus, Luas or Dart is almost always capped at \u20ac2. Then there\u2019s a daily cap of \u20ac6. It doesn\u2019t expire, so if you\u2019re staying for a while or you\u2019re a frequent visitor to Ireland, getting one is a no-brainer.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not coming back for the foreseeable, you can also get a refund for the card. However, you\u2019ll have to register your card online and then apply for a refund to an Irish bank account. Not totally practical if you\u2019re coming from abroad! But there is another option\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t

Visitor Leap Cards<\/span><\/h3>\n

Visitor Leap Cards<\/span><\/a> operate a little differently. You opt for 24 hours (\u20ac8), 3 days (\u20ac18) or 7 days (\u20ac24) of travel and that ticket is pre-loaded onto your card. You can add additional travel periods onto your card, up to a maximum of five times. And then your card expires after 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a handful of places you can pick this up across Dublin, including the Spar in Terminal 2. You can also have it delivered before your trip as you\u2019ll need the physical card. It could take anywhere from three to 14 working days to arrive, depending on where you live.<\/span><\/p>\n

Long story short, we think it\u2019s a safer bet to just buy one when you arrive!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Getting around Dublin: your options<\/span><\/h2>\n

All aboard Dublin Bus<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Dublin Bus<\/a> network is the most widespread public transport service in the city and even dips into neighbouring counties.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paying in cash? Remember that you need exact change in coins to get on the bus.<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re using a Leap Card, just tag on and hop aboard. No need to tag off here, but if you want to blend in with the locals, thank your bus driver as you\u2019re getting off at the rear door.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t

Nip around on the Luas<\/span><\/h3>\n

With a name meaning speed in Irish, the Luas<\/a> is one of the quickest ways to traverse the city centre. This tram system has two lines, Green and Red. The Green Line is great for heading south towards the leafy suburbs of Ranelagh or the shopping at Dundrum.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Red Line connects the two main train stations, Heuston and Connolly, as well as the central bus station Bus\u00e1ras. It\u2019s also perfect for big gigs as it goes to the <\/span>3Arena<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can buy a single fare in the machines at every Luas stop or use your Leap to tag on at the platform before you board. Don\u2019t forget to tag off too!<\/span><\/p>\n

Coastal views on the Dart<\/span><\/h3>\n

Dublin Area Rapid Transport<\/a> (more commonly known as the Dart), hugs Dublin\u2019s coast and can take you to some of the most beautiful seaside spots in the county. A trip on the Dart is worth it for the views alone!<\/span><\/p>\n

You can buy single journey tickets at the machines in any station or use your Leap Card to tag on and off as you go through the platform barriers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pedal power<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"Trinity<\/p>\n

If you like an urban cycle, you\u2019re going to love <\/span>Dublinbikes<\/span><\/a>. There are <\/span>stations all over the city centre<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Here for just a couple days? Get a day pass from just \u20ac3.50. After that, you pay by journey. The first 30 minutes of every trip is free and it\u2019ll cost \u20ac0.50 for a full hour of cycling joy.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can rent it for up to 24 hours at an additional cost, but our tip for keeping your budget in check is to return your bike at the nearest station after every ride. And then if you want to hit the road again, simply pick up a new one.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t

Taxi!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Want to get somewhere fast? Hail a taxi off the street or head to an official rank to get yours. Alternatively, download the <\/span>Uber<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>Freenow <\/span><\/a>apps to schedule pick ups or get a ride asap.<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re collecting Avios, Uber might be the better option. Link your <\/span>AerClub and Uber accounts <\/span><\/a>and every Irish taxi trip takes you one step closer to a free flight!<\/span><\/p>\n

Taxis have to take card but you almost always have the option to pay in cash too, if you prefer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wondering about tipping? In Ireland, taxi drivers won\u2019t expect a tip but around 10% would be appreciated. You can add a tip in the apps, if that\u2019s how you hailed!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t

Your own set of wheels<\/span><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re planning on a road trip or two to neighbouring counties, hiring a car could make sense. And the good news is that you can <\/span>collect Avios<\/span><\/a> when you hit the road with <\/span>Avis or Budget<\/span><\/a>. Download the <\/span>Payzone app<\/span><\/a> and make your life a little easier when you\u2019re paying for parking around the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting around Dublin with children<\/span><\/h2>\n

Getting around Dublin as an adult is one thing, but is it trickier with kids? The good news is that Dublin is actually a pretty kid-friendly city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leap Cards for kids<\/span><\/h3>\n

Children under five years travel free on most public transport, with no additional card required. However, children aged 5-8 can also travel free if they have a <\/span>Child 5-8 Leap Card<\/span><\/a>. To apply for this, you need to upload your passport and your child\u2019s passport or birth certificate. And, of course, allow for time for it to be sent out to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

But there\u2019s another option for kids aged 5-15. You can pick up a <\/span>Child 5-15 Leap Card<\/span><\/a> from thousands of outlets and when you do, your kid will travel with a reduced fare.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Mother<\/p>\n

Is Dublin buggy friendly?<\/span><\/h3>\n

First things first, in Dublin, we tend to call strollers and pushchairs \u201cbuggies\u201d or, occasionally, \u201cprams\u201d. But whatever you call it, these are important pieces of kit for small people.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the most part, Dublin is pretty buggy friendly. Most of the footpaths in the city centre are fairly wide and relatively even, with dishing at all pedestrian crossings. Of course, the Temple Bar cobbles might prove slightly challenging!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Luas and Dart are well set up for buggy access. You should be able to get on the platform and find a spot for your buggy with no major hassle. Dublin Bus can be a little trickier, especially during rush hour, as there\u2019s only space for one or two buggies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"St<\/p>\n

Irish car seat requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n

As a rule of thumb, <\/span>children need a car seat<\/span><\/a> of some kind until they are around 12 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

Add a child seat or booster to your car hire and you\u2019re covered if you\u2019re renting a set of wheels. If you\u2019ve got a baby under nine months, contact the hire company first to see if they have a suitable seat for your family.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, this rule doesn\u2019t apply to taxis. They\u2019re not legally required to supply car seats and children don\u2019t have to use them in a taxi. Having said that, some taxi companies will provide one if you ask or you can use your own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hiring kids equipment in Dublin<\/span><\/h3>\n

If you don\u2019t already know, every family with young kids flying with Aer Lingus can take <\/span>one fully collapsible buggy free of charge, plus a car seat, booster seat or travel cot<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you want to hire any extras, <\/span>Stork Rentals<\/span><\/a> have a great range available in their Dublin Airport base.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choose from well known brands for car seats, travel cots, high chairs, bouncers and even baby hiking carriers! They\u2019ll even install car seats for you free-of-charge.<\/span><\/p>\n
