It\u2019s a great place to base yourself as a tourist, especially for a short trip.<\/p>\n<p>If you only have 48 hours in this extraordinary European capital, here\u2019s how to spend them well.<\/p>\n<h3>Head to The Jordaan on Friday evening<\/h3>\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerlingus.com\/en-ie\/flights-from-dublin-to-amsterdam?gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=22890013341&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD6H-oKKBKvXVvmTQ5ID9MZKJ92gg&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwqPLOBhCiARIsAKRMPZpMQCkup8tqbEXgFUY9oK1m5bLjGFFD0061ciuPBFDbm8oeObh-ZSoaAlObEALw_wcB\">fly with Aer Lingus from Dublin to Amsterdam<\/a>, you\u2019ll land at Schiphol airport. From there, you can grab a direct train to Centraal Station \u2014 it only takes 20 minutes and costs just a few euros.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve dropped your bags at your accommodation, we recommend you head straight to the <a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamian.com\/see\/photos\/jordaan-amsterdam-tips-by-a-local\/\">Jordaan<\/a>, the neighbourhood to the west of the main canal ring and widely considered the most charming in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Its narrow streets, brown caf\u00e9s (those beautiful old-fashioned Dutch pubs known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsterdamsights.com\/eatdrink\/bruincafe.html\"><em>bruine<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsterdamsights.com\/eatdrink\/bruincafe.html\"><em> kroegen<\/em><\/a>), independent galleries, and flower-filled bridges are everything Amsterdam is supposed to be.<\/p>\n<p>Find a table at one of the neighbourhood\u2019s terraces as the evening light turns golden over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsterdam.info\/prinsengracht\/\">Prinsengracht<\/a>, order a cold Heineken or Amstel, and let the city welcome you properly. We recommend you book tickets in advance and arrive early, especially during the weekends in peak season.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_Golden_Age_painting\">Golden Age<\/a> collection is worth the extra effort: see Rembrandt\u2019s Night Watch, Vermeer\u2019s The Milkmaid, and hundreds of works that place Dutch painting among the supreme achievements in European art.<\/p>\n<p>For something a little different but no less impressive, walk around the corner to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseum.nl\/en\/visit\/whats-on\/the-permanent-collection-van-goghs-masterpieces\">Van Gogh Museum<\/a>, which houses the world\u2019s largest collection of his work, including the instantly recognisable Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, The Bedroom and The Potato Eaters.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve worked up an appetite, take a short tram ride south to the <a href=\"https:\/\/albertcuyp-markt.amsterdam\/?lang=en\">Albert Cuyp Market<\/a>, Amsterdam\u2019s largest and most lively street market (running since 1905!). Pick up fresh stroopwafels warm from the griddle, raw herring with onions from a stall \u2014 a Dutch tradition worth trying \u2014 or simply browse the stalls for souvenirs or trinkets to take home in your luggage.<\/p>\n<h3>Absorb Amsterdam\u2019s nighttime atmosphere at De Pijp<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamsterdam.com\/en\/explore\/neighbourhoods\/de-pijp\">De Pijp<\/a> is Amsterdam\u2019s most cosmopolitan neighbourhood, built in the late 19th century and now home to a brilliant mix of caf\u00e9s, restaurants, and bars. The <a href=\"https:\/\/privateguidesofeurope.com\/2020\/11\/18\/how-to-do-amsterdams-highlights-in-one-day\/\">Gerard Douplein square<\/a> is the heart of it \u2014 terraces spill out onto the cobblestones and the atmosphere on a warm Saturday evening is about as good as it gets.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to round off your evening with something a little special, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.ie\/Attractions-g188590-Activities-c42-t233-Amsterdam_North_Holland_Province.html\">book an evening trip on a canal boat<\/a>. Seeing the city from the water as the light softens is one of Amsterdam\u2019s great experiences. The smaller private boats are far better than the large tourist vessels, but there\u2019s something for everyone, from romantic trips for couples to live entertainment shows for families and fascinating guided tours for solo travellers.<\/p>\n<h3>Walk the Canal Ring with one last coffee on Sunday<\/h3>\n<p>Make sure to leave yourself sufficient time to enjoy the canal ring before you get ready for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerlingus.com\/en-ie\/flights-from-amsterdam\">flight home from Amsterdam.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Walk the Herengracht and Keizersgracht slowly, take snaps of the pretty bridges and their ubiquitous locks, and stop at the corner bakeries for a coffee and an apple turnover. <a href=\"https:\/\/houseboatmuseum.nl\/\">The houseboat museum on Prinsengracht<\/a> offers a lovely glimpse of an Amsterdam life most visitors never see.<\/p>\n<p>Before heading to the airport, take one final stroll through the Nine Streets \u2014 a compact grid of cross-streets connecting the main canals, lined with boutiques, vintage shops, and excellent caf\u00e9s.
