One of Europe\u2019s busiest airports, it\u2019s the kind of place many travellers just fly in and out of. But its gleaming banking towers and beautifully rebuilt old town make this a rather special city that\u2019s well worth a trip in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>At just over two hours <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerlingus.com\/en-ie\/flights-from-dublin-to-frankfurt\">flying time from Dublin to Frankfurt<\/a>, you could find yourself by the Liffey in the morning and the Main River in the evening, watching the sunset from a laid-back tavern or high-end cocktail bar. Here\u2019s how we\u2019d spend a relaxing weekend in Germany\u2019s unofficial capital.<\/p>\n<h2>Friday Evening: Sachsenhausen and Ebbelwoi<\/h2>\n<p>Frankfurt Airport sits just 15 minutes from the city centre by S-Bahn, which means you can really hit the ground running.<\/p>\n<p>Check into your hotel or Airbnb and head straight to Sachsenhausen \u2014 the neighbourhood on the southern bank of the Main river \u2014 for your first taste of the real Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<p>Sachsenhausen is Frankfurt\u2019s most characterful neighbourhood and a great place to get to grips with a beloved local tradition: Ebbelwoi, the tart, slightly sparkling apple wine that Frankfurters have been drinking for centuries. It\u2019s served cold in a traditional blue-grey Bembel jug, poured into ribbed glass tumblers, and accompanied by simple, hearty food.<\/p>\n<p>Zum Gemalten Haus on Schweizer Strasse is one of the oldest and most atmospheric taverns in the city. Order a jug of ebbelwoi, a plate of handk\u00e4s mit musik (a sharp local cheese dressed with vinegar, oil, and onions), and a schnitzel if you\u2019re hungry. The locals are friendly, the atmosphere is warm, and you\u2019ll probably make new friends before the evening finishes.<\/p>\n<h2>Saturday morning: The R\u00f6merberg and the new Old Town<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitfrankfurt.travel\/en\/poi\/roemerberg-with-ostzeile\">R\u00f6merberg<\/a> is Frankfurt\u2019s central medieval square and one of the most photographed spots in Germany. The gabled facades of the R\u00f6mer town hall have been rebuilt with extraordinary care, and the Altstadt \u2014 a 35-building quarter of reconstructed medieval streets that reopened in 2018 after decades of restoration \u2014 is the result of one of Germany\u2019s most ambitious urban projects. It\u2019s really quite incredible to see, so well worth stopping for a while to soak in all the rich detail mixed among the timbers. On a clear day, the contrast between ancient spires and modern glass towers is uniquely Frankfurt and makes for some great photos to share online or send back home.<\/p>\n<p>If tummies are starting to rumble, move onto t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.ie\/Attraction_Review-g187337-d33960525-Reviews-Kleinmarkthalle-Frankfurt_Hesse.html\">he Kleinmarkthalle<\/a>, Frankfurt\u2019s beloved indoor market, just a few minutes\u2019 walk from the R\u00f6merberg. There you\u2019ll find three floors of stalls selling regional cheeses, smoked meats, fresh bread, and local wines. Go early on Saturday \u2014 it gets busy fast, and for very good reason. Don\u2019t forget to bring a backpack so you can fill your boots with delicious German snacks for the flight home.<\/p>\n<h2>Saturday afternoon: The Museumsufer<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumsufer.de\/en\/\">Museumsufer<\/a> \u2014 Frankfurt\u2019s museum embankment \u2014 stretches along both banks of the Main and contains more cultural institutions per kilometre than almost anywhere in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staedelmuseum.de\/en\/\">St\u00e4del Museum<\/a> is the standout: a collection spanning seven centuries with works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Botticelli, and Monet. Allow two to three hours if you have a regular appreciation for art \u2014 more if you\u2019re a dedicated fan.<\/p>\n<p>In the late afternoon, you could rent a bicycle at one of the stations along the river and cycle west towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frankfurt-rhein-main.de\/en\/poi\/detail\/nizzagaerten-the-gardens-of-nice-19437b12b9\">Nizza gardens<\/a> \u2014 a riverside park full of palm trees and fig trees that feels genuinely Mediterranean on a warm afternoon. Named after the French city of Nice, it\u2019s a wonderful place to sit by the river and people-watch for an hour or two.<\/p>\n<h2>Saturday evening: Dinner and a view<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re hoping for a traditional dinner, try <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolcafe.de\/\">Metropol<\/a> on Weckmarkt in the Altstadt \u2014 it offers reliable modern German cooking in a relaxed, convivial setting.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, take the lift to the top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maintower.de\/en\/\">Main Tower observation deck<\/a> (it\u2019s 200 metres up, and the only publicly accessible skyscraper viewpoint in the city) for a final look at Frankfurt by night. With the banking district shimmering below and the river glowing in the dark, it makes for a spectacular scene.<\/p>\n<h2>Sunday: Gr\u00fcneburgpark and a slow farewell<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve grabbed a coffee and pastry, <a href=\"https:\/\/frankfurt.de\/themen\/umwelt-und-gruen\/orte\/parks\/parks-von-a-bis-z\/grueneburgpark\">Gr\u00fcneburgpark<\/a> is a great place to spend Sunday morning \u2014 a broad, beautiful park in the Westend neighbourhood where Frankfurters hang out with kids, play with their dogs, and generally relax over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Pick up supplies from the Kleinmarkthalle if you\u2019re there early enough, then find a patch of grass and dig into an ad-hoc picnic. With 52% of the city dedicated to green space, you\u2019ll never be far away from nature in Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth taking a walk back through the banking district before you leave: The contrast \u2014 between Frankfurt\u2019s shiny skyscrapers and cobblestoned streets \u2014 is the thing you\u2019ll remember most.<\/p>\n<p>Frankfurt is one of Germany\u2019s most underestimated cities, offering excellent food, rich history, and relaxing riverside walks.
