Tavira is a hidden gem that straddles the Gil\u00e3o River and skims the Ria Formosa Natural Park, so of course it\u2019s one of the best areas in the Algarve for families who love nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ria Formosa Natural Park has been voted one of Portugal\u2019s seven natural wonders, with <\/span>salt pans <\/span><\/a>that attract incredible wildlife, including flamingos! Plus there\u2019s an easy walking trail from the city, making it ideal for kids too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond Ria Formosa, there are long sandy beaches. Getting there is half the fun, with beaches like Praia de Tavira accessible by <\/span>ferry<\/span><\/a> and others like Paria do Barril accessible by a <\/span>seasonal tourist train<\/span><\/a> or on foot over a bridge. Side note: Paria do Barril is also home to hundreds of rusting anchors embedded in sandbanks, a striking memorial to the area\u2019s traditional fishing industry.<\/span><\/p>\n
