Our Aer Lingus Staff Member, Emma, recently enjoyed a whistle-stop tour of some of Barcelona\u2019s best eateries.\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t

They say that the atmosphere in a tapas bar should match the spirit of a well-loved pub in Ireland. Passers-by should be drawn in by the chatter of friends and the clatter of plates piled high with tasty bite-sized treats. With that in mind, every great trip to Barcelona should start with a feast of tapas.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

BEST FOR TAPAS: <\/strong><\/h4>\n

For the patrons crowded around the noisy tables in Barcelona\u2019s best tapas bars, the focus of the visit isn\u2019t the food or the decor \u2013 the true purpose is to spend time with loved ones.<\/p>\n

El Xampanyet<\/a>\u00a0(The Champagne) in Barcelona\u2019s\u00a0El Born<\/em>\u00a0district (just around the corner from the\u00a0Picasso Museum<\/a>) is the perfect place to eat, drink and be merry \u2013 Spanish-style. Start with a chilled glass of bubbly \u2013 the homemade Cava is a must-try.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Highlights during my recent visit included grilled Iberico pork with salted green peppers, a comforting dish of chickpea stew, crusty slices of tomato bread, anchovies straight from the tin, and grilled octopus with mashed potato and paprika.<\/p>\n

For another authentic tapas experience, head to\u00a0La Cova Fumada<\/a>\u00a0(The Smoked Cave) in Barceloneta, the city\u2019s seaside neighbourhood. This no-frills former wine cellar is the birthplace of Barcelona\u2019s most beloved tapa,\u00a0La Bomba<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a deep-fried spicy potato meatball.<\/p>\n

Other favourites on the blackboard-scrawled menu include the calamari, salted cod, homemade black pudding and an assortment of fresh seafood. The house wine is also excellent.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

SECRET ROOFTOP BAR:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

For a change of pace,\u00a0pop into\u00a01881 by Sagardi,<\/a>\u00a0a stylish rooftop bar just a five-minute walk from La Cova Fumada. This is a real hidden gem.\u00a0Head into the\u00a0Catalan History Museum<\/a> (history buffs should take the time to enjoy the exhibitions \u2013 entry is \u20ac4.50) on la Pla\u00e7a de Pau Vila and take the lift to the fourth floor \u2013 you\u2019ll see the entrance on your left.<\/p>\n

\"\"La Rambla Street, Barcelona<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Grab a perch overlooking the harbour and sit back and\u00a0relax with a cold\u00a0beer, clara or a cocktail. The sweeping panorama of the palm tree-lined boardwalk, glamorous yachts glistening in the marina, and the cable cars gliding to and from Montjuic mountain is\u00a0one of the best in the city.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

BEST FOR SWEET TREATS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Patisseria La Colmena<\/a>\u00a0(metro stop: Jaume I) sells a heavenly array of homemade baked goods. Sitting pretty on Pla\u00e7a de l\u2019\u00c0ngel, right in the heart of the city, this gorgeous bakery opened its doors in 1849 \u2013 don\u2019t miss the beautiful plaque before you step through the door.<\/p>\n

La Colmena is the place to go if you\u2019re craving a good coffee and a pick-me-up treat. Don\u2019t leave with trying a\u00a0panellet<\/em>. These marzipan-based sweets are traditionally prepared for All Saints\u2019 Day \u2013 La Colmena is a treasure trove of these\u00a0classic Spanish desserts<\/a>, and the good news is that they bake them all year round.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

BEST FOR BRUNCH:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Instagram-worthy brunch places are popping up on every corner of Barcelona. Try\u00a0Brunch and Cake<\/a>\u00a0for fabulously fluffy pancakes and great iced coffee.<\/p>\n

Super cool\u00a0Picnic<\/a>, on the corner of Passeig de Picasso and Carrer del Commer\u00e7, is a great location to start your day in Barcelona. Work off your pulled pork tacos or eggs Benedict with a leisurely stroll through nearby\u00a0Parc de la Ciutadella<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

If you\u2019d prefer to leave the tourists behind and start the day with a more traditional breakfast, head to the family-run\u00a0Xurreria Dels Banys Nous<\/a>\u00a0in the Gothic Quarter for incredible freshly-made churros.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

SNACKS ON THE GO:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re visiting the beautiful\u00a0Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar<\/a>\u00a0(the \u20ac8 guided tour offers a great insight into the La Ribera neighbourhood and gorgeous views of the city), don\u2019t miss out on\u00a0Casa Gispert<\/a>, just across the street on Carrer dels Sombreres.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

This is one of Barcelona\u2019s oldest food shops \u2013 the in-store wood fire oven has been roasting nuts since 1851. Head to the back of the shop to see it in action before picking up some savoury treats \u2013 the roasted almonds are the best I\u2019ve ever tasted. The chocolate-covered macadamia nuts also come highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

GRANDMOTHERS KNOW BEST:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Traditionally, Spanish cooking relied on the creativity of the matriarchs to make the most of the food they had at their disposal. That meant that across Spain, the ingredients available dictated the recipes, rather than the other way around.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re planning a picnic at\u00a0Bunkers del Carmel<\/a>\u00a0or a day at the beach, why not stock up on fresh local produce from one of Barcelona\u2019s 39 food markets? These colourful and chaotic marketplaces are\u00a0cornerstones of Catalan communities.<\/p>\n

As Miguel, my charming\u00a0secret food tour host<\/a>\u00a0advised during our visit to the\u00a0Santa Caterina Market<\/a>, \u2018Follow the\u00a0abuelas<\/em>\u00a0(grandmothers) doing their weekly shop. They haven\u2019t been going to the wrong places for 50 years.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

BEST MARKETS TO VISIT:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

As well as the 173-year-old Santa Caterina Market in the El Born district, the newly revamped\u00a0Sant Antoni Market<\/a>\u00a0is also well worth a visit. The spectacular space in Sant Antoni, one of Barcelona\u2019s coolest barrios,\u00a0has been treated to a \u20ac80 million facelift.<\/p>\n

Stock up on fresh fruit, bread and pastries, and choose from an incredible array of Spanish cheeses. Manchego and the\u00a0melt-in-your-mouth Payoyo cheese from C\u00e1diz are well worth sampling.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

Santa Caterina Market, Barcelona<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Follow his advice and sample everything from jam\u00f3n ib\u00e9rico and paleta serrana, to chorizo ib\u00e9rico bellota\u00a0and chorizo piccante until you find the one that tastes the best!<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

PAELLA BY THE SEA:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

For a tasty and authentic dish of paella, head to family-owned\u00a0Salamanca<\/a>\u00a0in Barceloneta. The walls of this charming seafront restaurant are adorned with hundreds of photos of celebrities with the well-moustached owner.<\/p>\n

Order a jug of the house Sangria and start with a salad or a plate of salchich\u00f3n \u2013 it\u2019s best to have something light and fresh before the main event. As is tradition, the waiter will come to the table to show you the entire dish of paella that\u2019s been specially prepared for your table.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, grab an ice cream on the go and find a spot to relax on the beach!<\/p>\n
