Aer Lingus Cabin Crew Member Sean Hill
Aer Lingus’ own Sean Hill has become a marathon enthusiast, sharing his inspiring journey from footballer to long-distance runner in less than a year. Growing up, Sean’s athletic life revolved around football, which naturally built his stamina. But in early 2024, he decided to challenge himself by taking up long-distance running. What began as an effort to master shorter distances—a 15-minute 5k, a fast 10k, and a half marathon.
Sean’s October 2024 marathon debut in Lisbon was unforgettable, clocking in at an impressive 2:58:28. Just three weeks later, he conquered the Dublin Marathon, igniting what he calls the “marathon bug”—a passion he believes will last a lifetime.
As an Aer Lingus cabin crew member, Sean’s job gives him a unique advantage: the ability to run in multiple cities each week. This constant travel fuels his passion for running, offering new inspiration with every route. From LA’s Redondo Beach to New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, Sean transforms iconic destinations into his personal running tracks, experiencing these places in a way few others can. “Out of all my transatlantic flights,” he shares, “I’ve only ever skipped a run once, in San Francisco, and that was due to injury.”
The discipline required for marathon training mirrors Sean’s dedication to his work and running routine. His preparation includes a blend of intervals, tempo runs, and long-distance sessions, along with a balanced diet rich in carbs and proper warm-ups to avoid injury. For aspiring marathoners, Sean advises consistency: “Fueling correctly and committing to a routine are essential for a successful race day.”
Reflecting on his favorite marathons, Sean highlights Dublin as his top choice, enjoying the thrill of running through familiar streets with the encouragement of local supporters. He also has a special appreciation for New York’s iconic marathon atmosphere, where over a million spectators line the streets. “New York really stands out,” he says, recalling the city’s warm treatment of marathoners, who are even offered free local experiences.
Sean’s story is a testament to how travel and running intersect, unlocking opportunities to see the world in a unique and active way. His ever-changing routes ensure he never lacks inspiration, and the breathtaking views and vibrant atmospheres of each destination motivate him to keep going. From Lisbon’s coastal beauty to New York’s electrifying energy and Rome’s historic charm, marathon travel invites runners to turn their fitness journey into an unforgettable travel experience.
As Sean looks ahead, he’s aiming to set a new personal best in the half marathon and tackle a full triathlon in Ibiza next year, with plenty more marathons on the horizon. To keep up with his journey, follow Sean’s journey on Instagram and TikTok.
