Holidays 3 hours from Ireland

Here are some of my favourite destinations less than three hours away from Ireland, giving you more time to explore.
The Algarve
The Algarve is, quite simply, spoilt for beaches – its long coastline offering a mix of golden stretches and hidden coves, scattered with limestone caves. The choice is yours on the hundred miles of shoreline, with the stronger seas and higher winds on the western coast it’s ideal for surfing and paddle boarding.
The eastern coast is more suited for children’s bucket and spade holidays with its gentler waves lapping the beach and its warmer waters, due to its proximity to the Mediterranean. In the middle, tiny pockets of beach are often only accessible by boat, making them the perfect summer adventure. With flight times less than 3 hours, it’s no wonder it’s a favourite for Irish holidaymakers.

Marseille
Marseille is a city of two sides — traditional and gritty. Charming neighbourhoods like Panier in Marseille co-exist alongside historic attractions like Château d’If near the city’s coast. The history-steeped port city hosts a feast of world cuisines and cultural celebrations. Let Marseille seduce you with her ancient roots, stunning coastal views and 300 days of sunshine per year.

Prague
Prague has been a fierce competitor with Paris for most romantic European city for years. At the heart of this stunning city are Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and some of the best beer in Europe. The historic centre and colourful baroque buildings are balanced out with trendy shops and sophisticated wine bars.

Pisa
Pisa is the gateway to central-western Tuscany, but Pisa has to lure travellers to stay put: Renaissance landmarks, delectable cuisine, a charming riverside location and one very famous leaning tower.

Bath
With Roman roots and a hint of indulgence, Bath might be the best place in Britain for a mini break. Take a closer look at the city’s most famous resident in the Jane Austen Centre and treat yourself to some food in a cosy gastropub. But no trip here is complete until you’ve gone to a natural geothermal bath.

Nice
The French Riviera is known for its wonderful weather. Visit Nice and you can walk along the seven-mile Promenade des Anglais, which takes you around the Bay of Angels – or Baie des Anges. It’s lined with bars and restaurants where you can enjoy dinner al fresco against a picturesque backdrop. Then, as well as relaxing on the beaches you can take advantage of the glorious weather by heading up Castle Hill or Mont Boron to take in the panoramic views.

Glasgow
When it comes to Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow has plenty going on to keep you on your toes. It’s the full package, with world-class museums and galleries, breath-taking architecture, wonderful parks, unique attractions, high street, designer and independent retailers, as well as an excellent range of bars, pubs and restaurants. If that wasn’t enough, it’s really close with a flight time just over an hour from Ireland.
