Checked Baggage - Shorthaul flights (Europe)
Check-in baggage fees apply as detailed below. Aer Lingus does not charge additional Airport Check-in fees for individuals with check-in baggage. Some other airlines require you to add an airport check-in fee to the checked baggage fee.
Economy / Low Fare
- Checked baggage weighing in total up to 20kgs will be charged the discount fee per bag per flight if bags are booked up to two hours prior to departure on aerlingus.com.
- A standard fee of €18 or equivalent per bag per flight will be charged at the airport on day of departure.
Flexible / FlexiFare
- 2 checked bags weighing in total up to 20kgs can be booked free of charge. The online discount fee will be charged per bag per flight for 3rd and subsequent bags if bags are booked up to two hours prior to departure on aerlingus.com.
- A standard fee of €18 or equivalent per bag per flight will be charged at the airport on day of departure.
Baggage Allowance
- A maximum of 9 bags per passenger can be booked on the website, however, a maximum of 20kgs (44lbs) in total baggage weight for each passenger checking in bags is permitted (excluding infants).
- No pooling or sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even within a party travelling on the same booking.
- Excess weight will be charged €9 or equivalent for each additional kilo per flight exceeding the maximum baggage allowance if the excess weight fee is paid up to two hours prior to departure on aerlingus.com, or alternatively the standard excess weight fee of €12 will be charged at the airport on day of departure.
- The fees are non-refundable.
- Exceptional items such as golf bags or skis will be charged at the applicable rate. See Sports Equipment Information for details.
- A buggy/stroller is carried free of charge.
- All medical equipment, e.g. dialysis machines and wheelchairs, is carried free of charge.
- Small musical instruments may qualify as hand baggage. Medium sized instruments may be carried in the cabin if the passenger purchases an individual seat for the instrument.
- If the instrument will not fit in the extra seat, it must be checked in and normal excess baggage rates apply.

Business Class
- Passengers are permitted 3 bags free of charge.
- The weight of any one piece of baggage must not exceed 32Kgs/70lbs and combined weight must not exceed 69kgs (150lbs).
- Infant baggage allowance is 10kgs (22lbs) in addition to one collapsible stroller.
Special Items
- Sports Equipment such as (golf bags, skis etc) is carried as standard baggage.

Interline Baggage - (other airlines)
Aer Lingus will through-check baggage as a courtesy onto any carrier that have a baggage agreement in place, upon presentation of documentation of the itinerary showing Aer Lingus and partner carrier flights on the same ticket.
This includes the following airlines: American Airlines, Air France, Air India, Alaska Airlines, Finnair, British Airways, Air China, China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, Emirates, Etihad, Gulf Air, Iberia, Japan Airlines, KLM, Kenya Airways, Kuwait Airways, Malev, Malaysian, Martin Air, Northwest, Austrian Airlines, Pakistan Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, South African Airways, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airlines, United Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic and JetBlue Airways.
Cabin/Carry-On Baggage

Cabin baggage must weigh less than 10 kgs / 22 lbs in total carried in one bag per passenger and be small enough to fit in an overhead bin or under your seat.
- The maximum dimensions for a cabin bag are 56cms x 45cms x 25cms or 22in x 18in x 10in.

Passengers in breech of the baggage allowance policy will be subject to additional baggage charges at the gate or may be offloaded.
- All cabin/carry-on bags are checked and weighed at the airport. Any bags exceeding size and/or weight will be checked-in and passengers must pay a fee of €18.00 or equivalent per bag per flight for their bags when checking-in.
- Passengers are not permitted to carry any bag containing sharp objects. Also please note carriage of liquids is curtained as per the EU Security Rules At Airports, effective since 6 November 2006.
- Flights departing the USA are subject to TSA security rules.
- Passengers in Row 1, or at an emergency exit, MUST store baggage in an overhead bin.
Excess Baggage
Shorthaul flights (Europe)
- Excess weight will be charged €9 or equivalent for each additional kilo per flight exceeding the maximum baggage allowance if the excess weight fee is paid up to two hours prior to departure on aerlingus.com, or alternatively the standard excess weight fee of €12 will be charged at the airport on day of departure.
- No one piece of baggage can exceed 32 kg in weight.
- Necessary medical equipment will be excluded from the excess baggage rules and these items will not be subject to 32 kg maximum weight allowance or excess baggage charge.

Sports Equipment
Longhaul Flights (to/from USA)
Shorthaul Flights (Ireland/UK/Europe)
- Pay online prior to day of departure: Sports equipment, (golf bags, fishing equipment, surf boards, skiing equipment and snowboards) will be charged at a rate of €30.00 or equivalent per item each way.
- Pay at the airport on day of departure: Sports equipment, (golf bags, fishing equipment, surf boards, skiing equipment and snowboards) will be charged at a rate of €40.00 or equivalent per item each way.
- Passengers can travel with a maximum of 1 item per passenger excluding infants.
- The maximum weight allowable for carriage of such equipment described is 15kgs.
- If the weight exceeds this limit, passengers will be charged excess baggage fees in addition to the flat rate charge.
- Bicycles, diving gear and windsurfing equipment cannot be booked online.
- Bicycles must be pre-booked by contacting the aerlingus.com helpdesk. A maximum of six pre-booked bicycles may be carried on each aircraft. Bicycles must be boxed or bagged. These can be purchased at the airport. To pack bicycles passengers are advised to remove the front wheel and secure it to the frame, lower the handlebars and saddle and place in line with the frame and invert the pedals.
- The fees are non-refundable.

Sports guns cannot be booked online and are carried only under the following conditions:
- Sport Guns are to be dismantled.
- Sports Guns when dismantled are carried only as checked baggage.
- Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be packed separately from other baggage.
- Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be available for inspection by security.
- Ammunition is limited to 5kg per passenger and must be packed in containers of Wood, metal, or fireboard with the contents protected against any movement.
- Subject to an extra charge for flights within Europe.
Musical Instruments
- A musical instrument can be carried in the cabin provided it is within the cabin baggage size/weight limit.
- If the instrument is larger than the permitted hand baggage size, and the passenger wishes to carry it in the cabin, they have to purchase an additional seat for the instrument (this can be done online and normal taxes and charges apply). The instrument should be booked in the name of Cello/A Ms or Harp/A Ms. The weight of the instrument including its carry case, must not exceed 75kgs/165lbs.
- Larger musical equipment (including but not limited to double base, harps and drums) is unsuitable for carriage in the cabin. However, these items may be carried in the hold of the aircraft for a special fee of €30.00 online and €40.00 at the airport, (subject to change).
Animals & Pets
- At time of booking, Aer Lingus Reservation staff must be informed if you plan to travel with a pet and or animal. Separate procedures apply for passengers travelling with Service Animals (Seeing Eye Dogs).
- Animals/Pets can be booked on direct flights between Ireland and New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington and Orlando on Aer Lingus flights only. All animals will be transported in the Cargo Hold.
- Due to the duration of flights from Dublin to Los Angeles and San Francisco, Aer Lingus will not carry pets on these routes.
- Animals/Pets cannot be carried on flights to and from the UK and Europe.
- Due to industry reports of serious damage to aircraft as a result of dogs becoming loose in aircraft holds, the following breeds of dogs are not to be carried under any circumstances on any Aer Lingus aircraft.

- Travelling from USA: PET EXPRESS will make the arrangements to ship your pet(s) to Ireland on behalf of Aer Lingus. Contact Pet Express at 1-866-PET-MOVE or visit their website at www.petexpress.us. Final transit destination for animals/pets transported from North America by Aer Lingus is Dublin.
Please note: animals cannot be shipped from the USA on Fridays or Saturdays.
- Travelling from Ireland: Pets (cats & dogs only) can be booked as excess baggage by contacting Aer Lingus reservations. There is a €160 per flight sector per crate payable at the airport on the day of departure.

If the passenger is not travelling with the animal, or for the carriage of any animal other than household pets, they will be booked as cargo. Bookings will only be confirmed at the earliest 14 days prior to travel.
Service Animals
Travelling out of Ireland
- At the time of booking, Aer Lingus Reservation staff must be informed if you plan to travel with a Service Animal. Service Animals (seeing eye dogs) may be carried in the cabin on all short-haul and long-haul flights. Service animals such as seeing eye dogs are carried free of charge. An overall maximum of three Seeing Eye Dogs may be carried in the cabin.
Travelling into Ireland from USA
- Aer Lingus welcomes service animals used by persons with disabilities to accompany customers in the passenger cabin.
- Prior approval is required from the department of Agriculture in Ireland. Preparing your service animal correctly and meeting all of the conditions for travel is the responsibility of the passenger.
- Advance notice is required as the number of service animals carried on each aircraft is restricted. Please contact a Customer Care representative for full details and assistance.

All other flights
- Service Animals (Seeing Eye dogs) may be carried in the cabin on short-haul flights. An overall maximum of three Seeing Eye Dogs may be carried in the cabin.
Prohibited/Restricted Items
Use of the following is forbidden on all flights:
- Walkie-talkies, Remote controlled toys
- Display units with cathode ray tubes
- Wireless PC equipment, PC printers
- DVD, CD writers and mini-disk recorders
- TV receivers, Telemetric equipment
- Bluetooth devices and 'Blackberry' technology
- Wireless LAN
Hearing-aids and heart pacemakers are not included in these exclusions.
Permitted inflight, but not during take-off, approach and landing:
- Palm organisers
- Portable DVD players
- Portable audio equipment (e.g. Walkman, CD player, mini disk player, iPOD,and MP3 player)
- Handheld computer games (e.g. Gameboy)
- Video cameras, Digital cameras, GPS handheld receivers
- Electric shavers, Electric toys (excluding remote controlled)

Cell/mobile phones:
May be used until the aircraft doors are closed and opened, on departure and arrival respectively. Use is prohibited during fuelling procedures.
Use of all other personal electronic equipment is forbidden.
Other Prohibited Items
Note: Passengers are not permitted to check-in or carry on-board any wet-cell batteries either in wheelchairs or as stand-alone batteries.

(B) Pointed edged weapons & sharp objects, pointed or bladed articles capable of causing injury including:
- Kilt pins
- Axes & Hatchets
- Arrows & Darts
- Crampons (grappling iron, hooked bar of iron, or plate with iron spikes used in mountaineering)
- Harpoons & Spears
- Ice axes & ice picks
- Ice skates
- Lockable or flick knives with blades of any length.
- Knives, including ceremonial, religious and hunting knives, made of metal or any other material strong enough to be used as a potential weapon.
- Meat cleavers
- Machetes
- Open razors and blades (excluding safety or disposable razors with blades enclosed in cartridges)
- Sabres, swords & swordsticks
- Scalpels
- Scissors with blades of any length
- Ski and walking/hiking poles
- Throwing stars
- Tradesman's tools that have the potential to be used as a pointed or edged weapon e.g. drill and drill bits, box cutters, utility knives, all saws, crowbars, hammers, spanners, blow torches, however, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and other tools.
(C) Blunt instruments, any blunt instrument capable of causing injury including:

- Billiard, snooker and pool cues
- Clubs or batons - rigid or flexible - e.g. Billy clubs, blackjacks (truncheon of leather
covered lead with flexible shaft), night sticks & batons

(D) Explosives and flammable substances, any explosive or highly combustible substances which poses a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the security/safety of the aircraft property including:
- Ammunition
- Blasting caps
- Detonators & fuses
- Explosives and explosive devices
- Replica or imitation explosive material or devices
- Mines & other explosive military stores
- Grenades of all types
- Gas & gas containers e.g. Butane, propane, acetylene, oxygen - in large volume
- Fireworks, flares in any form and other pyrotechnics (including party poppers and toy caps)
- Non safety matches
- Smoke generating canisters or cartridges
- Flammable liquid fluid e.g. Petrol/gasoline, diesel, lighter fluid, alcohol, ethanol
- Aerosol spray paint
- Turpentine & paint thinner
- Alcoholic beverages exceeding 70% by volume (140% proof)
(E) Chemical and toxic substances, any chemical or toxic substance which poses a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the security/safety of aircraft or property including:
- Acids and alkalis e.g. spillable "wet" batteries. (not permitted in the cabin or in the hold on on any flights).
- Corrosive or Bleaching Substances - e.g. mercury, chlorine
- Disabling or incapacitating sprays - e.g. mace, pepper spray, tear gas
- Radioactive material - e.g. medicinal or commercial isotopes
- Poisons
- Infectious or biological hazardous material e.g. infected blood, bacteria and viruses
- Material capable of spontaneous ignition or combustion
- Fire extinguishers ( excepting as authorised by fire protocols and as aircraft emergency equipment).
(F) Liquids, unless in individual containers with a capacity not greater than 100 millilitres or equivalent and contained in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a capacity not exceeding 1 litre. The contents of the plastic bag shall fit comfortably and the bag shall be completely closed.
Liquids include gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, shaving foam, aerosols and other items of similar consistency.
Exemptions may be granted if the liquid is:
- to be used during the trip and is either required for medical purposes or a special dietary requirement, including baby food. When requested to do the passenger shall provide proof of authenticity of the exempted liquid; or
- obtained airside beyond the point where boarding passes are controlled from outlets that are subject to approved security procedures as part of the airport security programme, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase at that airport on that day; or
- obtained in the security restricted area from outlets that are subject to approved security procedures as part of the airport security programme; or
- obtained at another Community airport, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase at airside at that airport on that day; or
- obtained on board an aircraft of a Community air carrier, on condition that the liquid is packed in a bag that is both tamper evident and displays satisfactory proof of purchase on board that aircraft on that day
The following prohibited items shall not be placed in checked-in baggage/hold baggage:
- Explosives, including detonators, fuses, grenades, mines and explosives.
- Gases; Propane, butane.
- Flammable liquids, including Gasoline, methanol.
- Flammable solids and reactive substances, including Magnesium, firelighters, fireworks flares.
- Oxidizers and organic peroxides, including Bleach, car body repair kits.
- Toxic or infectious substances, including rat poison, infected blood.
- Radioactive material, including medicinal or commercial isotopes.
- Corrosives, including mercury, vehicle batteries.
- Vehicle fuel system components which have contained fuel.
Note:
Any sharp objects in checked-in baggage should be securely wrapped to prevent injury to screeners and handling personnel.

- They will be subject to a max baggage allowance of 30k including arms and ammunition.
- All government and legal regulations must be complied with.
- All documentation and licenses are the passengers responsibility.
- Subject to an extra charge for the carriage of sports guns and ammunition.
Delayed/Missing Baggage
Delayed Baggage
- If Aer Lingus misplaces or loses a customer's baggage, we will make every effort to return it to the customer as soon as possible and deliver it to an address of their choice free of charge within 24 hours of its arrival at their final destination.
- If your baggage has not been received after 72 hours (3 days), please download our questionnaire under the 'Need Help' section and return it to the email address: central.baggage-tracing@aerlingus.com.
- The information you provide us with will help speed up the search for your baggage. Your baggage questionnaire must be returned within 21 days of reporting your baggage missing.
Baggage Claims
- If passenger's baggage is delayed or damaged, the liability of an international carrier is limited under The Montreal Convention. If you take out insurance on this web site, you should contact Mondial Assistance directly, at the address provided below. Alternatively if you hold insurance through another company you should contact them.

- If you do not hold personal travel insurance all claims/complaints must be submitted in writing to the relevant Aer Lingus address below accompanied by your Baggage File Reference number, (which you received at the airport when you initially reported your missing baggage) baggage tags and any receipts/quotations you may hold. Please be advised that relevant receipts are necessary for auditing purposes when considering all claims.
Compensation
- Any compensation due to customers with baggage related claims will adhere to our Terms and Conditions of Carriage.
- After 24 hours of a bag being declared missing we allow €60.00/ $75 USD per twenty-four-hour period to non-residents on the presentation of relevant receipts towards the cost of essential interim purchases. This is up to a maximum of 3 days and €180.00/$225.
