History

Aer Lingus was founded by the Irish Government in April 1936 to provide air services to/from Ireland. The first flight, from Dublin to Bristol, took place on May 27th 1936. On October 2nd 2006, Aer Lingus entered a new phase in its history with the airline's floatation on the Irish and London Stock Exchanges, becoming a publicly quoted company and realising €400 million in equity for the airline's future growth.

Business Model

Aer Lingus has adopted a demand-led approach to capacity planning and deployment with a re-focusing of pricing policy on enhancing yield rather than on maximising load factors.  Demand opportunities are currently developed through network management and partnership arrangements while connecting traffic flows are complement point-to-point demand. Aer Lingus' primary distribution channel is its website aerlingus.com. In 2010, approximately 81% of total passenger revenue was generated through aerlingus.com.

 


Products & Services

Cabin Classes

Aer Lingus offers a single economy class service on all short-haul routes, and a two class Business and Economy service on all long-haul routes. Product differentiation on short-haul routes is in the form of a Low fare, Plus fare and a Flex fare.

Auxiliary Revenue

In addition to revenue from low fares, Aer Lingus also generates revenue from sales of products and services that are ancillary to its core passenger operations, including:

  • In-flight sales of merchandise, beverages and hot and cold meals
  • Commissions from sales of car rentals
  • Hotel accommodation and travel insurance sold through aerlingus.com
  • Fees for passenger upgrades
  • Access to airport lounges
  • Commissions from online currency conversion
  • Advertising in Aer Lingus' in-flight magazine "Cara"

Gold Circle Club: Gold Circle Membership provides access to exclusive airport lounges, special reservation services and other benefits, such as advanced seat preferences and dedicated check-in areas.


Other Services

Aer Lingus provides a cargo transportation service on some of its scheduled passenger routes, including services to the United States and Europe. Aer Lingus provides mail transportation services between Ireland and the United Kingdom. In addition to providing its own cargo handling services at Dublin and Shannon airports, Aer Lingus provides cargo handling services to Singapore Airlines, SAS and Lufthansa.

On 1st February 2008, Aer Lingus and JetBlue Airways, the New York based low fare, high frills Airline announced an industry-first strategic partnership to come into effect beginning 3rd April 2008. The innovative partnership will enable Irish and U.S. customers to book a single low fare reservation between Ireland and a variety of U.S. destinations, connecting through JetBlue's home base at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and through Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The partnership is made possible by a sophisticated, easy-to-use booking process available on www.aerlingus.com. Customers booking through jetblue.com will be quickly transferred with one click to aerlingus.com to complete their booking.

United Airlines

Aer Lingus has a codeshare agreement with United Airlines. Services are between Ireland and North America and between Ireland and London. Getting there is easy with our seamless booking process, coordinated baggage handling, and simplified reservations, ticketing and check-in. Aer Lingus Gold Circle members are able to earn points on trans-Atlantic flights operated by United and redeem points for travel across the United network. Additionally, Aer Lingus customers are also able to earn points on select United domestic flights. Members of the United Airline's Mileage Plus® program are able to earn miles on the code share routes and may redeem Mileage Plus miles across the Aer Lingus network.

Aer Arann Franchise

Aer Lingus has a franchise agreement with Irish regional airline Aer Arann under which Aer Arann operates a number of routes under the Aer Lingus Regional brand, livery and flight code. Aer Arann is an independent airline and will continue to operate other routes outside the scope of the franchise agreement. This franchise agreement will enable Aer Lingus passengers to book flights through aerlingus.com and all other Aer Lingus sales channels on a range of new services to/from Dublin and Cork, which will be operated by Aer Arann as Aer Lingus Regional on Aer Lingus' behalf and to our high standards of customer service, quality and hospitality. The agreement will provide Aer Lingus passengers with increased services, in particular to the UK, a greater choice of frequency on services to regional UK markets and improved connectivity to/from Aer Lingus' Transatlantic network.
